Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) was crowned overall champion at the Perodua Eco Challenge 2013, which happened last weekend at the Shah Alam go-kart circuit. The Ipoh institution, winners in 2011 and 2012, scored the most points out of the nine categories contested in the annual competition. The polytechnic's redesigned Myvi managed to travel a distance of 52.38 km on 2.5 litres of Petronas Primax 95 fuel (20.95 km/l). They also came up tops in the "Best Presenter" and "Styling" challenges. "We congratulate PUO for their impressive performance today and to all the institutions of higher learning that participated in our biggest corporate responsibility programme," Perodua president and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said. Launched in 2009, the Perodua Eco-Challenge was introduced with the aim of exposing students from local institutions of higher learning to a real-world working environment. In this edition, a total of nine institutions were selected to redesign a Perodua Myvi within a six-month timeframe. 
They are PUO, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM). The categories contested in this year's PEC were "Longest Distance", "Time Attack", "Marketing Challenge", "Overall Winner", "Best Booth" and new categories such as "Styling", "Best TVC" and "Best Presenter". Two categories – "Best Booth" and the "Best TV Commercial Award" – went to UNITEN. Congrats to all winners! Perodua spent a total of RM131,200 in prizes for PEC 2013, which is endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Education. Overall, Perodua has used some RM6 million for the programme since 2009, making PEC its largest annual corporate responsibility activity. I just wanted to share a little story about my life during my study at the Polytechnic Ungku Omar. Before I study at PUO, I'm Uitm Arau student. On the first day i came here, everyone is busy making new friends but I was looking for my friends who have been separated for a long time. Eventhough i have a lot of new friends but for me, no one can be like my old friends. New students are required to attend all the activities such as orientation. Eventhough the orientation is a very boring thing but we have no choice. Seriously i told you that since i'm in primary school i really hate orientation day. We are required to line up according to our respective departments. When i arrived at the place we need to line up, I found that no other woman in my department!!! I feel very embarrassed. Everybody just line up quietly and do their own thing. Before this at my old school, mechanical student is uncontrollable . Suddenly, 4 girls came towards me. At that time i can smile brightly. Finally my department still have another girl. But I'm still the only girl in course of diploma in mechanical engineering. During the first time the i met with the boys that same course with me, I felt very boring and I felt like i don't have any confident that I can survive here. Even the school I was used to study before this, there were so many guy and just 5 girl in the class, the male student were very friendly but it is different here. I try to think positively as "perhaps everyone still shy ". I'm staying in a hostel in Block F and it is the last block. I am used to staying in hostels since I was 13 years old. So that not a problem for me to be away from my family. At here, lecturers also have a lot of experience. The schedule of classes here also I was familiar because it's not so different by the time I was studying at uitm ago. The biggest challenge for me is whether I can survive to studying here or not because I'm a person who likes a nomadic. sometimes if i felt bored i will find a new place for started my new life. I hope I will be successful. For me in the end , only the strongest will earn the " medal" . In this world everybody will classify us to either being no 1 or dropping out. Everything will be as experience no matter sweet or bitter. when i felt like giving up , i will look back on how far i have already go. Launched in 2009, the Perodua Eco-Challenge was introduced with the aim of exposing students from local institutions of higher learning to a real-world working environment. "The Perodua Eco Challenge, which started out as a Corporate Responsibility programme has now also become an important human capital development agenda," Aminar said. He explained that the Perodua Eco Challenge programme has helped trained the participating students and universities to be more industry oriented as well as focusing on their academic pursuits. Aminar also announced that Perodua will continue with the Perodua Eco Challenge next year in line with the company's focus on assisting Youth and Education. In this edition of the Perodua Eco-Challenge, a total of 9 institutions of higher learning have been selected to redesign a Perodua Myvi into a totally different look within the 6-month timeframe given. A total of 9 insitutions of higher learning qualified for this year's Perodua Eco Challenge are PUO, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Also included are Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM).
