BETONG: Good teamwork between the civil service, political leaders and the people has contributed to the rapid development of Betong Division, said Assistant Minister of Welfare Robert Lawson Chuat.

Equally important, he said, is the trust of the people in the area towards the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

"In Betong, we are very fortunate to have a good team of dedicated civil servants and our visionary political leaders who can work together.

"And another very important factor is the people's trust in the BN government, who have been very supportive of the government's programmes," he said on Thursday during a dinner for the media attending a briefing on the Betong Division's development transformation.

"Ever since BN represented Betong, it was the beginning of a very effective implementation of government programmes."

The Bukit Saban assemblyman noted that rural parents now realised the importance of education and were sending their children to school.

He echoed Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu's view that education should be an integral component of the division's development programme.

"Education will become the key of our long-term planning because it is only through education that we can transform the lives of the people in the long-term," he explained.

The new Politeknik Metro School at Betong New Township, which will start operations in 2013, and the community college, he said, reflected this focus on education.

Lawson pointed out that other development areas like infrastructure and agriculture projects would not be neglected.

"Uniting the people under the BN umbrella is also one aspect that we will continue to carry out," he said.

BN political leaders in the area, he added, had clearly proven their critics wrong.

He said such critics had complained when the government began oil palm and rubber plantations 15 years ago, but the people were now enjoying better standards of living because of the two commodities.

Among those present were Betong Resident Datu Romie Sigan Daniel, Deputy Resident Pathi Kerni, District Officer Friday Belik, a political secretary to the Chief Minister Isik Utau, political secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dr Richard Rapu and state information senior assistant director (media) Samuel Simon.

Big turnout at Betong Hospital's 'Jom Sihat' programme - The Borneo ...

BETONG: The recent 'Jom Sihat' programme organised by Betong Hospital in collaboration with Betong Che Zhong Khor Moral Uplifting Association is deemed the best campaign to raise awareness of the importance of practising healthy habits from early age.

Betong Hospital director Dr Melvin Chung Hsien Liang emphasised that it was also aimed at fostering closer ties between the hospital and members of the public.

"This initiative is implemented under the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) in which the Health Ministry takes on the role of educating the community, especially school children, on the importance of good health," he said during the programme at SJKC Chung Hua Betong yesterday.

In addition, Dr Hsien pointed out that the hospital's focus would also be on educating the people about several serious diseases including Ebola and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

"Other diseases that have been reported in Betong district include dengue fever, tuberculosis and leptospirosis (infection caused by the leptospira bacteria found in rat's urine). We will do our best to provide all vital information so that the public can better understand these dangerous diseases," he said, hoping that children following this programme would get the most benefit.

"The saying 'prevention is better than cure' must be instilled in children as well as members of the community."

The Jom Sihat campaign also featured various activities including talks, health exhibition, health checks, colouring contest, aerobics, a blood donation drive and free consultation.

"The hospital focuses on stop-smoking campaign and teenage pregnancy, the two issues we are very concerned about. The hospital hopes that this programme would give greater awareness of such pressing issues to students in particular.

"Other than that, we have also organised talks on basic emergency aids which are important, as understanding them would enable us to take the necessary steps during any emergency," he added.

Meanwhile, Betong Che Zhong Khor secretary Chan Chu Chu said the response for the programme had been very encouraging.

"There are 400 people here including those from six schools, namely Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Betong, SMK Datuk Patinggi Kedit, SMK St Augustine, Betong Vocational College as well as students of Politeknik Metro Betong and Betong Community College.

"We are also very proud to have the involvement from Betong Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre (PDK)," he said.
