In pursuing quality and excellence in TVET, the Asia Pacific Accreditation and Certification Commission (APACC) covers another ground as each of the three Malaysian Premier Polytechnics submitted themselves to APACC accreditation through a two-day on-site visit, from February 20 – 28, 2014. The team of accreditors, composed of Dr. Hazrat Hussain (CPSC Faculty Consultant and Team Leader), Dr. Raul Muyong (APACC-certified Accreditor), Dr. Mohamad Hisyam Mohd. Hashim (Translator), Ms. Adrienne Abril (APACC Officer) and Mr. Bryan Noel Lazaro (APACC Officer) began the series of on-site visits to Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Shah Alam, Selangor on February 20 – 21. The team continued with Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Pasir Gudang, Johor on February 24 – 25 and Politeknik Ungku Omar, Ipoh, Perak on February 27 – 28.

Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA), located in Shah Alam, Selangor, was initially established as Politeknik Shah Alam in 1997. PSA specializes on Medical Electronics. Aside from offering an Advance Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Medical), PSA developed its Centre of Excellence in Technology (CoT) for the field of Medical Electronics, and now known as the Centre for Medical Electronic Technology. PSA also offers programs on the following areas: Facility Management, Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Wood-Based Technology, Electronic Engineering (Control) and (Communication), Mechanical Engineering, Packaging, Insurance, Marketing, Business Studies, International Business, and Mechanical Maintenance. On the other hand, Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS), located in Pasir Gudang, Johor, was formerly known as Politeknik Johor Bahru and began its operations in 1998. Its niche area lies on Fashion and Clothing Design and Graphics Design, as well as Hotel and Tourism Management. PIS' CoT was set up to cater to the space needed in Graphics and Design. Other programs offered by PIS include: Mechatronic Engineering, Electronic Engineering (Control) and (Communication), Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials, and Industrial Management. Datuk Dr. Arshad Bin Kassim (DPSM, KMN, DSM, BCM) was recently assigned to be the Director of PIS.

Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO), meanwhile, is the pioneering polytechnic established in Ipoh, Perak in 1969 through the assistance of UNESCO. It is the only polytechnic in Malaysia that offers the Marine Engineering program, thus developing its CoT on the said field. With Mejar (K) Dato' Hj. Md. Bor Bin Yusof leading the polytechnic as the Director, PUO offers the most number of programs among 31 other polytechnics across Malaysia. Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) was crowned overall champion at the Perodua Eco Challenge 2013, which happened last weekend at the Shah Alam go-kart circuit. The Ipoh institution, winners in 2011 and 2012, scored the most points out of the nine categories contested in the annual competition. The polytechnic's redesigned Myvi managed to travel a distance of 52.38 km on 2.5 litres of Petronas Primax 95 fuel (20.95 km/l). They also came up tops in the "Best Presenter" and "Styling" challenges. "We congratulate PUO for their impressive performance today and to all the institutions of higher learning that participated in our biggest corporate responsibility programme," Perodua president and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said. Launched in 2009, the Perodua Eco-Challenge was introduced with the aim of exposing students from local institutions of higher learning to a real-world working environment. In this edition, a total of nine institutions were selected to redesign a Perodua Myvi within a six-month timeframe. 
They are PUO, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM). It was the first time in three years that we have missed the Perodua Eco-Challenge due to commitments, so instead of live coverage, here are some belated updates. 2011 champs Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) has been crowned overall champion at Perodua Eco-Challenge 2012, held once again at the Melaka International Motorsports Circuit. Competing against 13 other institutions of higher learning, Ipoh's PUO was able to score the most points in all four categories – Engineering & Design, Longest Distance and two new for 2012 categories: Marketing and Time Attack. In the former, students must "sell" their product by way of events and a product presentation, while Time Attack is a dynamic test. In the main event, machines must go the furthest on half a litre of petrol. PUO was the winner of the "Longest Distance" category last year with 24.07 km from 500 ml of Petronas RON 95 petrol. They also won the "Manual Transmission Long Distance" category in 2009 with 23 km from one litre of petrol. 
This year, PUO finished second in the km/l race, doing 18.77 km from 500 ml of petrol. The winner was UNISEL with 21.88 km. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was second runner up with 15.80 km. PUO won the Engineering & Design category followed by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). For the Marketing challenge, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) was champion, followed by UiTM and UNISEL. Time Attack was won by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Second and third runners-up places were taken by UNISEL and Politeknik Port Dickson (POLIPD) respectively. Other participants were from Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia Spanish Institute, Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. 
The incumbent teams had to improve on their 2011 vehicles built using a ViVA 660cc engine and transmission. Perodua provided RM10,000 to each team for mods and RM5,000 for the marketing challenge. Total prize money for this year's race has been increased to RM103,000 from RM77,000 last year to cater for the three new categories. Congratulations to all winners! |

Politeknik Ungku Omar ditubuhkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia dengan bantuan UNESCO dan ini bertujuan untuk melatih tenaga pekerja separa profesional dan golongan pengurusan bawahan bagi menampung keperluan pembangunan negara. UNESCO telah dipertanggungjawabkan untuk merancang dan melaksanakan pembinaan PUO di atas tapak seluas 22.6 hektar di Jalan Dairy, Ipoh. Politeknik bermula beroperasi dengan menumpang di Pusat Latihan Harian, Ipoh dengan 300 orang penuntut.Tenaga pengajarnya pada masa itu terdiri daripada 28 orang pensyarah tempatan dan dibantu oleh 14 orang sukarelawan dari Kanada, Amerika Syarikat, Jerman dan Jepun. Kampus Politeknik Ungku Omar terletak di kawasan Ampang, Ipoh. Pada penghujung 1973, Politeknik berpindah dari Pusat Latihan Harian ke kampus kekalnya dan telah dirasmikan pada 10 Mei 1974 oleh Y.B. Menteri Pendidikan pada masa itu, Allahyarham Tun Abdul Razak b Hussein. Kampus ini kini dikenali sebagai Kampus A setelah politeknik mengambil alih bekas kampus Maktab Perguruan Kinta dan dinamakan Kampus B pada 1990. Pada peringkat awal penubuhan, politeknik ini mempunyai empat jabatan pengajian iaitu Kejuruteraan Awam, Mekanikal, Elektrik dan Perdagangan. Pada tahun 1972, diwujudkan Jabatan Kejuruteraan Perkapalan dengan bantuan teknikal dan rundingan daripada JICA. Pada 1 Mac 1999, dua unit akademik dinaikkan taraf sebagai Jabatan. Unit Matematik dan Sains dijadikan Jabatan Matematik, Sains dan Komputer manakala Unit Bahasa/Agama pula dijadikan Jabatan Pengajian Am. Kini, Politeknik Ungku Omar mempunyai tujuh jabatan akademik. |

Peruntukan sebanyak RM24.5 juta diperolehi daripada United Nation Development Programme (UNDP). UNESCO telah dipertanggungjawabkan untuk merancang dan melaksanakan pembinaan politeknik tersebut di atas tapak seluas 22.6 hektar di Jalan Dairy, Ipoh. Politeknik ini mengambil sempena nama Allahyarham Dato' Profesor Ungku Omar Ahmad demi mengenang jasa dan sumbangan beliau kepada negara dan bangsa terutamanya dalam bidang penyelidikan perubatan. Pada mulanya Politeknik ini menumpang di bangunan Pusat Latihan Harian (DTC) Ipoh yang kemudiannya menjadi Maktab Perguruan Kinta. Untuk kumpulan 300 orang pelajar yang pertama, kuliah diadakan mulai 2 Jun 1969. Tenaga pengajarnya pada masa itu terdiri dari 28 orang pensyarah tempatan dan dibantu oleh 14 orang sukarelawan dari Kanada, Amerika Syarikat, Jerman dan Jepun. Pada penghujung 1973, Politeknik berpindah ke kampus barunya dan ianya dirasmikan pada 10 Mei 1974 oleh Y.B. Menteri Pendidikan pada waktu itu, Allahyarham Tun Abdul Razak b Hussein Politeknik ini didirikan dengan tujuan untuk memberi latihan kepada lulusan sekolah menengah dengan kelayakan SPM atau SPMV untuk menjadi juruteknik mahir dalam bidang juruteknik mahir dalam bidang kejuruteraan, pegawai eksekutif pertengahan dan separa profesional di sektor awam dan sektor swasta. Pada peringkat awal, Politeknik ini cuma mempunyai empat Jabatan Akademik iaitu Jabatan Kejuruteraan Awam, Jabatan Kejuruteraan Elektrik, Jabatan Kejuruteraan Mekanikal dan Jabatan Perdagangan yang menawarkan pelbagai kursus di peringkat diploma dan sijil. Pada tahun 1972, diwujudkan Jabatan Kejuruteraan Perkapalan dan jabatan ini cuma menawarkan kursus tunggal pada peringkat Diploma. Pada 1 Mac 1999, dua unit akademik dinaikkan taraf sebagai Jabatan. Pada Julai 1999 pelaksanaan Program Teknologi Maklumat telah diletakkan di bawah Jabatan Matematik, Sains dan Komputer.Pada Januari 2007, Program Teknologi Maklumat telah diwujudkan di PUO dan telah diletakkan di bawah Jabatan Teknologi Maklumat dan Komunikasi. Sejak permulaan hingga hujung 2007, PUO telah melahirkan sejumlah 50,822 orang graduan. Kini terdapat bekas pelajar PUO berkhidmat di pelbagai bidang aktiviti ekonomi negara dan mereka itu telah menyumbangkan kemahiran serta tenaga dalam proses pembinaan negara. Kejayaan ini adalah berkat usaha bersama semua pihak termasuk pensyarah dan kakitangan lain yang kini berjumlah 681 orang. Pada 1 September 1999, Maktab Perguruan Kinta menyerahkan kampusnya kepada PUO. Kini kampus bekas maktab dinamakan Kampus B dan digunakan sepenuhnya oleh Jabatan Perdagangan, Jabatan Pengajian Am, Unit Kokurikulum dan Unit Pepreriksaan. Perkembangan dalam saiz kampus PUO adalah perlu untuk menampung pertambahan pesat dalam bilangan pelajar. Pada suatu hari nanti bilangan pelajar PUO dijangka akan menjejak 10,000 orang. The Asia Pacific Accreditation and Certification Commission (APACC) through its President, Dr. Mohammad Naim Yaakub, conferred APACC's first Gold-level accreditation to three premier polytechnics in Malaysia in a grand recognition rites held on May 22, 2014 in Malaysia. The government of Malaysia, through the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Department of Polytechnic Education (DPE) hailed with due recognition and distinctions the first-ever internationally accredited institutions in the country namely Politeknik Ungku Omar, Ipoh (PUO); Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS), Pasir Gudang, Johor and Polytechnic Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA), Shah Alam. In a proud moment for the TVET sector in Malaysia, the grand celebration of the APACC awarding ceremony, organized by the DPE, was attended by high level officials from the Malaysian government and neighboring countries like Singapore. Held at Dewan Seri Mutiara, Politeknik Seberang Perai, the event was witnessed by esteemed guests from the different polytechnic institutions in the country. Led by the representatives from MOE and DPE the awardees were honored for exhibiting international level and quality TVET services that paved the way for achieving their first accreditation from APACC with flying colors. The Plaques of Certification of Accreditation in the Gold level category was received by their respective directors namely: Dato' Hj Md Nor Bin Yusof for PUO, Datuk Dr. Arshad Bin Kassim for PIS and Hj Kamaruzaman Bin Ismail for PSA. The awards are valid for four years from March 11, 2014 to March 10, 2018. The polytechnics are the first institutions to achieve the highest ever standard given by the commission to its applicant institutions in its 10-year history. This recognition issued by APACC exemplifies the commitment of Malaysian TVET institutions to uphold the best international benchmarks and standards on their facilities and services. In her congratulatory speech, the Deputy Minister of MOE, Y.B. Datuk Mary Yap expressed the satisfaction of the Malaysian government on the success of the institutions in gaining the highest approval of APACC. She also appreciated APACC's effort in engaging higher learning institutions in the country to further aim for achieving their Key Success Indicators under the Polytechnic Transformation Plan 2020. Hon. Datuk Mary Yap further elaborated the Malaysian government's medium-term policy, which is aimed at "strengthening TVET and the education system in order to address the shortages of skilled workforce". She believes that a path towards internationalization, as emphasized by the National Higher Education Strategic Plan of Malaysia, is a significant driver towards a strong social and economic prosperity built on the foundations of closer cooperation among institutions, high quality offerings of TVET courses and diversified communities of international TVET experts. She also recognized the importance of maintaining quality education through periodic assessments executed by international accrediting bodies such as APACC. She foresees the increased benefits of synergy and collaboration between the TVET stakeholders in coming up with strategies, ideas and policies that will further develop the TVET workforce and improve the quality of TVET programs. These improvements, she believed, are necessary for the successful execution of the Malaysian Education Blueprint, which aims to attract international knowledge-seekers and workers to the country and eventually, establish a reputation of Malaysia as a knowledge and training hub recognized not only regionally but also globally. With the positive impact gained through APACC accreditation and the impending regional milestones of cooperation such as the proposed establishment of the ASEAN Quality Assurance Framework and the ASEAN Economic Community next year, she encouraged institutions nationwide to strengthen their Education Quality Assurance (EQA) practices focusing on areas that include EQA establishment and learner-centered practices, among others. In response, the CPSC Director General, Dr. Mohammad Naim Yaakub recognized the major milestone that the three institutions, the ministry and the whole country, have achieved upon garnering the coveted APACC distinction. He briefly discussed APACC's beginnings as an institutional accrediting body established through Seoul Agreement in 2004, which was signed by CPSC member countries. Through the years, APACC has undergone several transformations and improvements, keeping in mind its mission of guiding TVET institutions in the journey towards achieving internationally-recognized standards and systems through the production of mobile workforce that are equipped with regionally recognized qualifications and skills. He further urged the institutions to continue their journey towards quality management, indicating that "standards must not be lowered and must stand the test of time and should excel at national, regional and international levels." The roster of high level guests include Mr. Tan Chee King, First Secretary of the Singapore High Commission; Datuk Hj Mohlis Bin Jaafar, Director General of DPE; Tn. Hj. Kamaruddin Bin Hamzah, Deputy Director General, DPE; En. Shabudin Bin Man, Deputy Director General, DPE; Tn.Hj.Ghouse Abdul Kadir, Senior Director, DPE; Mrs. Noor Aidi Bt Nazri, APACC National Coordinator for Accreditation (NCA), among many other guests. The three institutions were assessed according to the seven criteria set by APACC namely (1) Governance and Management, (2) Teaching and Learning, (3) Faculty and Staff, (4) Research and Development, (5) Extension, Consultancy and Linkages, (6) Resources and (7) Support for Students. These benchmarks are critically reviewed and improved annually to adapt to the constantly changing trends and requirements for an international TVET institute.

Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) was crowned overall champion at the Perodua Eco Challenge 2013, which happened last weekend at the Shah Alam go-kart circuit. The Ipoh institution, winners in 2011 and 2012, scored the most points out of the nine categories contested in the annual competition. The polytechnic's redesigned Myvi managed to travel a distance of 52.38 km on 2.5 litres of Petronas Primax 95 fuel (20.95 km/l). They also came up tops in the "Best Presenter" and "Styling" challenges. "We congratulate PUO for their impressive performance today and to all the institutions of higher learning that participated in our biggest corporate responsibility programme," Perodua president and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said. Launched in 2009, the Perodua Eco-Challenge was introduced with the aim of exposing students from local institutions of higher learning to a real-world working environment. In this edition, a total of nine institutions were selected to redesign a Perodua Myvi within a six-month timeframe.

In pursuing quality and excellence in TVET, the Asia Pacific Accreditation and Certification Commission (APACC) covers another ground as each of the three Malaysian Premier Polytechnics submitted themselves to APACC accreditation through a two-day on-site visit, from February 20 – 28, 2014. The team of accreditors, composed of Dr. Hazrat Hussain (CPSC Faculty Consultant and Team Leader), Dr. Raul Muyong (APACC-certified Accreditor), Dr. Mohamad Hisyam Mohd. Hashim (Translator), Ms. Adrienne Abril (APACC Officer) and Mr. Bryan Noel Lazaro (APACC Officer) began the series of on-site visits to Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Shah Alam, Selangor on February 20 – 21. The team continued with Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Pasir Gudang, Johor on February 24 – 25 and Politeknik Ungku Omar, Ipoh, Perak on February 27 – 28.

Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA), located in Shah Alam, Selangor, was initially established as Politeknik Shah Alam in 1997. PSA specializes on Medical Electronics. Aside from offering an Advance Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Medical), PSA developed its Centre of Excellence in Technology (CoT) for the field of Medical Electronics, and now known as the Centre for Medical Electronic Technology. PSA also offers programs on the following areas: Facility Management, Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Wood-Based Technology, Electronic Engineering (Control) and (Communication), Mechanical Engineering, Packaging, Insurance, Marketing, Business Studies, International Business, and Mechanical Maintenance. On the other hand, Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS), located in Pasir Gudang, Johor, was formerly known as Politeknik Johor Bahru and began its operations in 1998. Its niche area lies on Fashion and Clothing Design and Graphics Design, as well as Hotel and Tourism Management. PIS' CoT was set up to cater to the space needed in Graphics and Design. Other programs offered by PIS include: Mechatronic Engineering, Electronic Engineering (Control) and (Communication), Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials, and Industrial Management. Datuk Dr. Arshad Bin Kassim (DPSM, KMN, DSM, BCM) was recently assigned to be the Director of PIS.

Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO), meanwhile, is the pioneering polytechnic established in Ipoh, Perak in 1969 through the assistance of UNESCO. It is the only polytechnic in Malaysia that offers the Marine Engineering program, thus developing its CoT on the said field. With Mejar (K) Dato' Hj. Md. Bor Bin Yusof leading the polytechnic as the Director, PUO offers the most number of programs among 31 other polytechnics across Malaysia. Programs offered by PUO include: Mechanical Engineering, Accountancy, Entrepreneurship, Islamic Wealth Management, Networking, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Land Surveying, Electronic Engineering (Computer) and (Communication), Automotive, Air Conditioning and Refrigerator, Mechatronic Engineering, Information Technology, Information Security, Islamic Banking and Finance, Business Studies, and Retail Management. Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) was crowned overall champion at the Perodua Eco Challenge 2013, which happened last weekend at the Shah Alam go-kart circuit. The Ipoh institution, winners in 2011 and 2012, scored the most points out of the nine categories contested in the annual competition. The polytechnic's redesigned Myvi managed to travel a distance of 52.38 km on 2.5 litres of Petronas Primax 95 fuel (20.95 km/l). They also came up tops in the "Best Presenter" and "Styling" challenges. "We congratulate PUO for their impressive performance today and to all the institutions of higher learning that participated in our biggest corporate responsibility programme," Perodua president and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said. Launched in 2009, the Perodua Eco-Challenge was introduced with the aim of exposing students from local institutions of higher learning to a real-world working environment. In this edition, a total of nine institutions were selected to redesign a Perodua Myvi within a six-month timeframe.

It was the first time in three years that we have missed the Perodua Eco-Challenge due to commitments, so instead of live coverage, here are some belated updates. 2011 champs Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) has been crowned overall champion at Perodua Eco-Challenge 2012, held once again at the Melaka International Motorsports Circuit. Competing against 13 other institutions of higher learning, Ipoh's PUO was able to score the most points in all four categories – Engineering & Design, Longest Distance and two new for 2012 categories: Marketing and Time Attack. In the former, students must "sell" their product by way of events and a product presentation, while Time Attack is a dynamic test. In the main event, machines must go the furthest on half a litre of petrol. PUO was the winner of the "Longest Distance" category last year with 24.07 km from 500 ml of Petronas RON 95 petrol. They also won the "Manual Transmission Long Distance" category in 2009 with 23 km from one litre of petrol.
This year, PUO finished second in the km/l race, doing 18.77 km from 500 ml of petrol. The winner was UNISEL with 21.88 km. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was second runner up with 15.80 km. PUO won the Engineering & Design category followed by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). For the Marketing challenge, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) was champion, followed by UiTM and UNISEL. Time Attack was won by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Second and third runners-up places were taken by UNISEL and Politeknik Port Dickson (POLIPD) respectively. Other participants were from Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia Spanish Institute, Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka.
The incumbent teams had to improve on their 2011 vehicles built using a ViVA 660cc engine and transmission. Perodua provided RM10,000 to each team for mods and RM5,000 for the marketing challenge. Total prize money for this year's race has been increased to RM103,000 from RM77,000 last year to cater for the three new categories. Congratulations to all winners! |

In pursuing quality and excellence in TVET, the Asia Pacific Accreditation and Certification Commission (APACC) covers another ground as each of the three Malaysian Premier Polytechnics submitted themselves to APACC accreditation through a two-day on-site visit, from February 20 – 28, 2014. The team of accreditors, composed of Dr. Hazrat Hussain (CPSC Faculty Consultant and Team Leader), Dr. Raul Muyong (APACC-certified Accreditor), Dr. Mohamad Hisyam Mohd. Hashim (Translator), Ms. Adrienne Abril (APACC Officer) and Mr. Bryan Noel Lazaro (APACC Officer) began the series of on-site visits to Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Shah Alam, Selangor on February 20 – 21. The team continued with Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Pasir Gudang, Johor on February 24 – 25 and Politeknik Ungku Omar, Ipoh, Perak on February 27 – 28.

Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA), located in Shah Alam, Selangor, was initially established as Politeknik Shah Alam in 1997. PSA specializes on Medical Electronics. Aside from offering an Advance Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Medical), PSA developed its Centre of Excellence in Technology (CoT) for the field of Medical Electronics, and now known as the Centre for Medical Electronic Technology. PSA also offers programs on the following areas: Facility Management, Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Wood-Based Technology, Electronic Engineering (Control) and (Communication), Mechanical Engineering, Packaging, Insurance, Marketing, Business Studies, International Business, and Mechanical Maintenance. On the other hand, Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS), located in Pasir Gudang, Johor, was formerly known as Politeknik Johor Bahru and began its operations in 1998. Its niche area lies on Fashion and Clothing Design and Graphics Design, as well as Hotel and Tourism Management. PIS' CoT was set up to cater to the space needed in Graphics and Design. Other programs offered by PIS include: Mechatronic Engineering, Electronic Engineering (Control) and (Communication), Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials, and Industrial Management. Datuk Dr. Arshad Bin Kassim (DPSM, KMN, DSM, BCM) was recently assigned to be the Director of PIS.

Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO), meanwhile, is the pioneering polytechnic established in Ipoh, Perak in 1969 through the assistance of UNESCO. It is the only polytechnic in Malaysia that offers the Marine Engineering program, thus developing its CoT on the said field. With Mejar (K) Dato' Hj. Md. Bor Bin Yusof leading the polytechnic as the Director, PUO offers the most number of programs among 31 other polytechnics across Malaysia. Programs offered by PUO include: Mechanical Engineering, Accountancy, Entrepreneurship, Islamic Wealth Management, Networking, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Land Surveying, Electronic Engineering (Computer) and (Communication), Automotive, Air Conditioning and Refrigerator, Mechatronic Engineering, Information Technology, Information Security, Islamic Banking and Finance, Business Studies, and Retail Management. All three premier polytechnics were assessed against the seven APACC accreditation criteria – Governance and Management; Teaching and Learning; Faculty and Staff; Research and Development; Extension, Consultancy, and Linkages; Resources, and Support to Students. Results of on-site visits conducted will be transmitted to polytechnics after thorough deliberation by the APACC Board. The National Coordinator for Accreditation – Malaysia, Pn. Noor Aidi Mohd Nadzri, was present from start to finish overseeing all the activities. Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) was crowned overall champion at the Perodua Eco Challenge 2013, which happened last weekend at the Shah Alam go-kart circuit. The Ipoh institution, winners in 2011 and 2012, scored the most points out of the nine categories contested in the annual competition. The polytechnic's redesigned Myvi managed to travel a distance of 52.38 km on 2.5 litres of Petronas Primax 95 fuel (20.95 km/l). They also came up tops in the "Best Presenter" and "Styling" challenges. "We congratulate PUO for their impressive performance today and to all the institutions of higher learning that participated in our biggest corporate responsibility programme," Perodua president and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said. Launched in 2009, the Perodua Eco-Challenge was introduced with the aim of exposing students from local institutions of higher learning to a real-world working environment. In this edition, a total of nine institutions were selected to redesign a Perodua Myvi within a six-month timeframe.
They are PUO, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM). The categories contested in this year's PEC were "Longest Distance", "Time Attack", "Marketing Challenge", "Overall Winner", "Best Booth" and new categories such as "Styling", "Best TVC" and "Best Presenter". Two categories – "Best Booth" and the "Best TV Commercial Award" – went to UNITEN. Congrats to all winners! Perodua spent a total of RM131,200 in prizes for PEC 2013, which is endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Education. Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) was crowned overall champion at the Perodua Eco Challenge 2013, which happened last weekend at the Shah Alam go-kart circuit. The Ipoh institution, winners in 2011 and 2012, scored the most points out of the nine categories contested in the annual competition. The polytechnic's redesigned Myvi managed to travel a distance of 52.38 km on 2.5 litres of Petronas Primax 95 fuel (20.95 km/l). They also came up tops in the "Best Presenter" and "Styling" challenges. "We congratulate PUO for their impressive performance today and to all the institutions of higher learning that participated in our biggest corporate responsibility programme," Perodua president and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said. Launched in 2009, the Perodua Eco-Challenge was introduced with the aim of exposing students from local institutions of higher learning to a real-world working environment. In this edition, a total of nine institutions were selected to redesign a Perodua Myvi within a six-month timeframe.
They are PUO, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM). The categories contested in this year's PEC were "Longest Distance", "Time Attack", "Marketing Challenge", "Overall Winner", "Best Booth" and new categories such as "Styling", "Best TVC" and "Best Presenter". Two categories – "Best Booth" and the "Best TV Commercial Award" – went to UNITEN. Congrats to all winners! Perodua spent a total of RM131,200 in prizes for PEC 2013, which is endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Education. It was the first time in three years that we have missed the Perodua Eco-Challenge due to commitments, so instead of live coverage, here are some belated updates. 2011 champs Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) has been crowned overall champion at Perodua Eco-Challenge 2012, held once again at the Melaka International Motorsports Circuit. Competing against 13 other institutions of higher learning, Ipoh's PUO was able to score the most points in all four categories – Engineering & Design, Longest Distance and two new for 2012 categories: Marketing and Time Attack. In the former, students must "sell" their product by way of events and a product presentation, while Time Attack is a dynamic test. In the main event, machines must go the furthest on half a litre of petrol. PUO was the winner of the "Longest Distance" category last year with 24.07 km from 500 ml of Petronas RON 95 petrol. They also won the "Manual Transmission Long Distance" category in 2009 with 23 km from one litre of petrol.
This year, PUO finished second in the km/l race, doing 18.77 km from 500 ml of petrol. The winner was UNISEL with 21.88 km. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was second runner up with 15.80 km. PUO won the Engineering & Design category followed by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). For the Marketing challenge, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) was champion, followed by UiTM and UNISEL. Time Attack was won by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Second and third runners-up places were taken by UNISEL and Politeknik Port Dickson (POLIPD) respectively. Other participants were from Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia Spanish Institute, Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka.
The incumbent teams had to improve on their 2011 vehicles built using a ViVA 660cc engine and transmission. Perodua provided RM10,000 to each team for mods and RM5,000 for the marketing challenge. Total prize money for this year's race has been increased to RM103,000 from RM77,000 last year to cater for the three new categories. Congratulations to all winners! |

Politeknik ini telah ditubuhkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia dengan bantuan UNESCO. Peruntukan sebanyak RM24.5 juta diperolehi daripada Program Pembangunan PBB (UNDP). Politeknik ini mengambil sempena nama Allahyarham Dato' Profesor Ungku Omar Ahmaddemi mengenang jasa dan sumbangan beliau kepada negara dan bangsa terutamanya dalam bidang penyelidikan perubatan. Penekanan dan bidang pelajaran politeknik ini bercorak sains dan teknologi. Politeknik Ungku Omar ditubuhkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia dengan bantuan UNESCO dan ini bertujuan untuk melatih tenaga pekerja separa profesional dan golongan pengurusan bawahan bagi menampung keperluan pembangunan negara. UNESCO telah dipertanggungjawabkan untuk merancang dan melaksanakan pembinaan PUO di atas tapak seluas 22.6 hektar di Jalan Dairy, Ipoh. Politeknik bermula beroperasi dengan menumpang di Pusat Latihan Harian, Ipoh dengan 300 orang penuntut.Tenaga pengajarnya pada masa itu terdiri daripada 28 orang pensyarah tempatan dan dibantu oleh 14 orang sukarelawan dari Kanada, Amerika Syarikat, Jerman dan Jepun. Kampus Politeknik Ungku Omar terletak di kawasan Ampang, Ipoh. Pada penghujung 1973, Politeknik berpindah dari Pusat Latihan Harian ke kampus kekalnya dan telah dirasmikan pada 10 Mei 1974 oleh Y.B. Menteri Pendidikan pada masa itu, Allahyarham Tun Abdul Razak b Hussein. Kampus ini kini dikenali sebagai Kampus A setelah politeknik mengambil alih bekas kampus Maktab Perguruan Kinta dan dinamakan Kampus B pada 1990. In pursuing quality and excellence in TVET, the Asia Pacific Accreditation and Certification Commission (APACC) covers another ground as each of the three Malaysian Premier Polytechnics submitted themselves to APACC accreditation through a two-day on-site visit, from February 20 – 28, 2014. The team of accreditors, composed of Dr. Hazrat Hussain (CPSC Faculty Consultant and Team Leader), Dr. Raul Muyong (APACC-certified Accreditor), Dr. Mohamad Hisyam Mohd. Hashim (Translator), Ms. Adrienne Abril (APACC Officer) and Mr. Bryan Noel Lazaro (APACC Officer) began the series of on-site visits to Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Shah Alam, Selangor on February 20 – 21. The team continued with Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Pasir Gudang, Johor on February 24 – 25 and Politeknik Ungku Omar, Ipoh, Perak on February 27 – 28.

Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA), located in Shah Alam, Selangor, was initially established as Politeknik Shah Alam in 1997. PSA specializes on Medical Electronics. Aside from offering an Advance Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Medical), PSA developed its Centre of Excellence in Technology (CoT) for the field of Medical Electronics, and now known as the Centre for Medical Electronic Technology. PSA also offers programs on the following areas: Facility Management, Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Wood-Based Technology, Electronic Engineering (Control) and (Communication), Mechanical Engineering, Packaging, Insurance, Marketing, Business Studies, International Business, and Mechanical Maintenance. On the other hand, Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS), located in Pasir Gudang, Johor, was formerly known as Politeknik Johor Bahru and began its operations in 1998. Its niche area lies on Fashion and Clothing Design and Graphics Design, as well as Hotel and Tourism Management. PIS' CoT was set up to cater to the space needed in Graphics and Design. Other programs offered by PIS include: Mechatronic Engineering, Electronic Engineering (Control) and (Communication), Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials, and Industrial Management. Datuk Dr. Arshad Bin Kassim (DPSM, KMN, DSM, BCM) was recently assigned to be the Director of PIS.

It is the only polytechnic in Malaysia that offers the Marine Engineering program, thus developing its CoT on the said field. With Mejar (K) Dato' Hj. Md. Bor Bin Yusof leading the polytechnic as the Director, PUO offers the most number of programs among 31 other polytechnics across Malaysia. Programs offered by PUO include: Mechanical Engineering, Accountancy, Entrepreneurship, Islamic Wealth Management, Networking, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Land Surveying, Electronic Engineering (Computer) and (Communication), Automotive, Air Conditioning and Refrigerator, Mechatronic Engineering, Information Technology, Information Security, Islamic Banking and Finance, Business Studies, and Retail Management. All three premier polytechnics were assessed against the seven APACC accreditation criteria – Governance and Management; Teaching and Learning; Faculty and Staff; Research and Development; Extension, Consultancy, and Linkages; Resources, and Support to Students. Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) was crowned overall champion at the Perodua Eco Challenge 2013, which happened last weekend at the Shah Alam go-kart circuit. The Ipoh institution, winners in 2011 and 2012, scored the most points out of the nine categories contested in the annual competition. The polytechnic's redesigned Myvi managed to travel a distance of 52.38 km on 2.5 litres of Petronas Primax 95 fuel (20.95 km/l). They also came up tops in the "Best Presenter" and "Styling" challenges. "We congratulate PUO for their impressive performance today and to all the institutions of higher learning that participated in our biggest corporate responsibility programme," Perodua president and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said. Launched in 2009, the Perodua Eco-Challenge was introduced with the aim of exposing students from local institutions of higher learning to a real-world working environment. In this edition, a total of nine institutions were selected to redesign a Perodua Myvi within a six-month timeframe.
They are PUO, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM). It was the first time in three years that we have missed the Perodua Eco-Challenge due to commitments, so instead of live coverage, here are some belated updates. 2011 champs Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) has been crowned overall champion at Perodua Eco-Challenge 2012, held once again at the Melaka International Motorsports Circuit. Competing against 13 other institutions of higher learning, Ipoh's PUO was able to score the most points in all four categories – Engineering & Design, Longest Distance and two new for 2012 categories: Marketing and Time Attack. In the former, students must "sell" their product by way of events and a product presentation, while Time Attack is a dynamic test. In the main event, machines must go the furthest on half a litre of petrol. PUO was the winner of the "Longest Distance" category last year with 24.07 km from 500 ml of Petronas RON 95 petrol. They also won the "Manual Transmission Long Distance" category in 2009 with 23 km from one litre of petrol.
This year, PUO finished second in the km/l race, doing 18.77 km from 500 ml of petrol. The winner was UNISEL with 21.88 km. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was second runner up with 15.80 km. PUO won the Engineering & Design category followed by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). For the Marketing challenge, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) was champion, followed by UiTM and UNISEL. Time Attack was won by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Second and third runners-up places were taken by UNISEL and Politeknik Port Dickson (POLIPD) respectively. Other participants were from Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia Spanish Institute, Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka.
The incumbent teams had to improve on their 2011 vehicles built using a ViVA 660cc engine and transmission. Perodua provided RM10,000 to each team for mods and RM5,000 for the marketing challenge. Total prize money for this year's race has been increased to RM103,000 from RM77,000 last year to cater for the three new categories. Congratulations to all winners! |

Program ini merupakan salah satu program yang merupakan Corporate Social Responsibility daripada pihak pelajar Politeknik Ungku Omar.
