English is taught as a foreign language in Bengkalis. Students are first taught English in Junior and Senior High School (Secondary School). In the polytechnics, the English language is not taught and not many of the lecturers can speak in English. Mr Halim, the Head of Business Studies who is proficient enough in the language, is put in charge of the English Language Society. An invitation to be a speaker was received to share with the lecturers and 90 students of Bengkalis Polytechnic on the curriculum, as well as, the approach used in teaching the English Language. An overview of the outcome-based approach and the VAK model of different learning styles were shared. In a class of 35 students, student-centred activities would have easily been carried out but with 90 students, it was challenging. Controlling 18 groups of 5 students for every activity was tiring. The level of productive noise due to discussions had to be considered and time management became an issue. Checking on 18 groups meant, either the lecturer would have to make a quick pit stop at every group, or spend a reasonable amount of time on the weaker groups but abandon a few groups. Then, a lecturer would have to consider the impact of a quick pit stop. The supposedly 2 hour lecturer stretched to 4 hours to enable all the activities to be carried out. Knowing that the students would not be able to complete all the activities, the 7 activities that were planned, were carried out where students were exposed to a particular activity but only half the time was given just to share with the students and lecturers the variety of activities that can be carried out in classrooms. We are at an advantage, as English is considered a second language in Malaysia while in Indonesia it is taught as a foreign language. Moreover, our environment provides our students with more exposure compared to students in Polytechnic Bengkalis. There are ample programmes on television and movies in the cinema which are in English and many can understand the English Language although they may not be fluent. For example trishaw peddlers in Melaka can speak in English due to the need to attract customers and communicate with them. However, in the Bengkalis village, apparently majority do not speak English and there is a lack of entertainment outlets such as the cinema. Students have to go online to watch any English programmes or movies, as majority of the programmes or movies have been translated to Bahasa Indonesia. It was a nice surprise to find that students in Bengkalis do watch 'Oh my English!'. It was indeed a humbling experience and an eye opener for me personally, as it makes me appreciate the facilities we have and not to take things for granted. We look forward to signing a collaboration with the polytechnic to enable us to conduct English camps with students from Bengkalis. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the director, deputy directors (advisors) Pak A Malik Ahmad and Pak Al Pansuri for their invitation and hospitality. A special thanks to Pak Halim, the Head of Business Studies for making this visit a memorable one for me. | | |

The Ipoh institution, winners in 2011 and 2012, scored the most points out of the nine categories contested in the annual competition. The polytechnic's redesigned Myvi managed to travel a distance of 52.38 km on 2.5 litres of Petronas Primax 95 fuel (20.95 km/l). They also came up tops in the "Best Presenter" and "Styling" challenges. "We congratulate PUO for their impressive performance today and to all the institutions of higher learning that participated in our biggest corporate responsibility programme," Perodua president and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said. Launched in 2009, the Perodua Eco-Challenge was introduced with the aim of exposing students from local institutions of higher learning to a real-world working environment. In this edition, a total of nine institutions were selected to redesign a Perodua Myvi within a six-month timeframe. They are PUO, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM). The categories contested in this year's PEC were "Longest Distance", "Time Attack", "Marketing Challenge", "Overall Winner", "Best Booth" and new categories such as "Styling", "Best TVC" and "Best Presenter". Two categories – "Best Booth" and the "Best TV Commercial Award" – went to UNITEN. Congrats to all winners! Perodua spent a total of RM131,200 in prizes for PEC 2013, which is endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Education. Overall, Perodua has used some RM6 million for the programme since 2009, making PEC its largest annual corporate responsibility activity.
